What Will My Child Be Learning This Half Term?

Friday 3rd October 2025

We have been working on addition and subtraction this week in Maths. To kick off the unit, we had a go at trying some mental strategies and then applied them to a gameshow-style quiz. It was great fun trying different methods and seeing if we could beat our friends and finding the answer.

Friday 26th September 2025

Due to the swimming season finishing, we started our indoor PE lessons this week. We had so much fun exploring different shapes and balances in gymnastics, working with a partner to create some fantastic routines. We discussed symmetrical shapes and asymmetrical shapes, and how we can use them to make our routines Olympic level!

Friday 19th September 2025

We have been developing our understanding of hockey in PE. This week, we looked further at attacking and defending, working in teams to try and block the other team from scoring. It was important that we considered our space, as well as who we were going to pass the ball to.

Friday 12th September 2025

Year 5 have had a brilliant first week back! We have had a great week exploring our new topics and getting to know our new classmates and teachers. In Music, we had a look at how boomwhackers can vary in pitch and dynamics depending on their size and how hard we hit them against our palms. This helped us to then follow a rhythm and play along to some of our favourite songs.

Friday 4th July 2025

What a busy week! On Tuesday, we all met our new class teachers (some old!) and saw our new Year 6 classes. We have also had our swimming galas, where the children displayed excellent technique and enthusiasm! Thank you to all who attended! On Thursday, we went over to John Hanson for our bespoke taster morning, where we participated in: English, where we used our justification skills; Science, where we completed several experiments and P.E, where we played basketball and rounders. Next week is Arts Week and we are all very excited!

It was lovely to watch and the children really enjoyed it. In Free Reading Friday, we took the opportunity to be outside and relaxed in the shade listening to short stories by Michael Rosen – it was so calm and peaceful we nearly fell asleep. We look forward to showing off our running techniques next week in our mini sports day!

The children were really creative in their responses, using a wide range of figurative language. In Maths, we have now finished our measurement topic. Year 5 have worked really hard to understand some really tricky concepts, such as converting between imperial and metric units of measurement. They have shown a great deal of determination and perseverance. As a team we are proud of how well year 5 are getting on.

Friday 14th March

Another fabulous week in year 5! We had the pleasure of becoming Greeks for a day. This involved three activities: cooking, Olympics and geometry. We made flat breads and a Tzatziki. Everyone had a role in the ‘kitchen’ and the food was delicious! At the end of the day we sat down and tasted what we had made. There was even enough for seconds! During the Olympics, children had the opportunity to take part in the activities that were in the very first Olympics: a 200m race, discus and javelin. Finally, geometry! We learnt about some essential mathematicians, such as Pythagoras and Euclid, by researching and creating top trump cards. The whole day was exciting and full of interactive learning. The children (and adults) had an amazing time.

Friday 7th March

Let’s begin with world book day! What an amazing day we had. It was so lovely to see everyone dressed up and the effort that was put into making these outfits look so good.
